Abia State is one of Nigeria’s 36 states, located in the southeastern region of the country. It was created on 27 August 1991 from the former Imo State, with Umuahia as its capital. The state has 17 Local Government Areas.
Abia is predominantly inhabited by the Igbo people and is known for its rich cultural heritage, strong entrepreneurial spirit, and commercial activity. Aba, its largest commercial centre, is widely recognized for manufacturing, trade, and small- and medium-scale enterprises, particularly in leather goods, garments, footwear, and other locally made products.
The state is also important for agriculture, producing crops such as cassava, yam, oil palm, cocoa, and plantain. Abia’s economy is further supported by commerce, manufacturing, services, and natural resources.
